Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Tourist InformationThe Australian Capital Territory is the capital territory of the Commonwealth of Australia and also the smallest self-governing territory in the country. It is an inland region in NSW, and is home to Canberra, the capital city of Australia. With a population of just over 325 000 people, Canberra was originally conceived and built specifically to be the capital city of Australia back in the early 1900's. Due to a total lack of agreement on whether Sydney or Melbourne should become the capital city of Australia, they decided to build Canberra as a compromise instead. American architect Walter Burley Griffin won the international competition to produce a design for Australia's new capital city in 1912. Canberra hosts Parliament House - home of the Federal Government. In fact, the Federal Government is the largest employer in the ACT and most of the businesses in the territory service the government market in some way. Canberra is home to 140 vineyards with more than 30 cellar doors in peaceful rural countryside around Canberra, and most are only 30 minutes from the city. The vineyards produce all the varieties you would expect from a premium wine region. However, the wineries are small and friendly and you may even get to meet the winemaker at the cellar door.
