Explore the Macedon RangesThe Macedon Ranges are so close to Melbourne and yet so refreshingly far away in relaxation and atmosphere. Visiting is your chance to get off the beaten track and find yourself, without ever getting lost. This picturesque region of fertile river valleys rolling hills and tree-clad ranges is woven together by diverse towns and villages. Each is distinct in character and ambience but knit together as a thriving collection of communities buzzing with artistic, historic and culinary energy. The Macedon Ranges is less than an hour's drive from Melbourne along the Calder Freeway, and only half that time from Melbourne Airport. The region was made famous by generations of 19th century sightseers and holiday makers visiting Hanging Rock, an Australian icon of almost mythological proportion. The international popularity of this famous outcrop continues today, and inspired Peter Weir's 1975 movie "Picnic at Hanging Rock". Better still, each Macedon Ranges experience is remade four times a year by the changing seasons. Discover old favourites anew amid an explosion of autumn and spring colours, cool and shady summers or snow dusted, snug-by-the-fire winters. It may feel like mere moments since you left Melbourne's suburbs, but swing off the Calder Freeway 40 minutes later at Gisborne and you’ll be transported into a different world. Gisborne is home to one of Victoria's biggest monthly markets and famous for its local wines and produce, including succulent olives and berries. Famous for its sturdy bluestone architecture, Kyneton is steeped in fascinating culture and history. Explore the beautiful Kyneton botanic gardens or Annie Smithers delectable menu at her Piper Street Bistrot. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Kyneton Ridge Winery and taste their award winning wines. The atmosphere that imbues Lancefield is as relaxing and easy as the rolling farmland surrounding it. Only 70km north of Melbourne and a short drive from the Hume Hwy, Lancefield is unquestionably a working town, with wide streets and the region's most famous weekend farmers market. Located at the northernmost point of the region alongside the Coliban River, Malmsbury is where the Calder Freeway ends and becomes a single lane highway. Visit the famous Malmsbury Food and Wine Fayre in November, or Jan Grant's famous Tin Shed Arts Gallery. The tree-clad protuberance of Mount Macedon can be seen from almost anywhere in the region. It dominates the horizon from afar, but up close it is even more impressive; flanked by forest and often clad in a necklace of cloud. Turn-of-the-century gold merchants built their hillside mansions here, complete with sprawling gardens. Some are open from January to September. Just south of Lancefield is the historic township of Romsey, known for its characteristic streetscape of cosy cafes and the award-winning Cope-Williams Winery. Follow the 8km heritage trail between the two towns to set the scene for a fascinating journey back in time. Evocatively named Woodend conjures images of chimney smoke veils through bare winter trees, of cosy fireside restaurants and five star retreats amid fantasy gardens. Woodend is home to Holgates Brewhouse, the award winning Campaspe House and Hanging Rock Winery. One of the best things about visiting the region is its historical trails and comprehensive Visitor Information Centres. Well informed local staff will be happy to answer questions and provide suggestions on where to go and what to see and do. Call 1800 244 711 for information. |
